Illuminated Trading Cards
A potential new avenue in the increasingly popular world of collectible memorabilia
Emerging Technologies
The University of Windsor has developed an e-textile composed of a super sheer fabric, capable of acting as a light emitting electrode. The fabric is highly flexible, stretch resistant, applicable with minimal amount of force, and is capable of being interchangeable with other samples. The designs on the fabric are printable through a cold wax resistance method, and the entire system can be powered by a battery powered source.
Why Pokémon Cards?
The Pokémon Company commands a huge presence in the collectable cards market, having sold 3.7 billion cards during the 2020-2021 fiscal year.
One method of drumming up demand for these cards is to introduce new types of cards. Pokémon has done regular cards, holographic cards, reverse holographic cards, jumbo cards, golden “break” cards, alternate art cards, full art cards, multiple cards that combine into one large card, and many more.
Most recently however, Pokémon has introduced cards with peelable sticker surfaces, which when peeled reveal a new card.
